Sumner Work

Academically, I have a BA in Psychology (Cedarville University), a BFA (Indiana University) and MFA in painting and drawing (Miami University), an MA in Art History (University of Chicago), and 30 graduate hours in 3D Animation (Academy of Art University).

Professionally, I’ve worked as a studio artist, as a free-lance illustrator, a graphic artist, as a college department Chair and as a professor. I was also a free-lance scenic artist for 15 years, painting sets and backdrops for theatre (including Broadway), network television and feature film in New York City and Chicago. While in Chicago I was asked to be the Midwestern Business Representative and chief negotiator for United Scenic Artists, LU829, overseeing contracts for Set Designers, Costume Designers, Lighting Designers, Scenic Artists (set painters) and television graphic artists in 19 states.

I was born into the family of a Baptist minister and was the last of five children. We traveled with my dad during the summers, so for three months I was in church listening to my dad preach seven days a week and twice on Sundays. We were a pretty musical household—my mom sang, my older brothers and sisters took piano lessons and at one point formed a mixed quartet for dad's services. Since I was the odd man out, I was asked to sing solos as early as 9 years old. Ultimately, I ended up with 8 years of vocal lessons, minored in voice and opera while in graduate school, and sang in the The Indianapolis Opera Company chorus, The Indianapolis Symphonic Orchestra Choir, the Northern Indiana Opera Company chorus and sang bit parts for them as well, and have been involved in church choirs and special music most of my life.

As a result of being under the Word so much I became a Christian early in life, and have grown up in the Baptist church. I have a deep love for Scripture and theology, but also enjoy studying how philosophy has affected the church and culture in general throughout history.
